Article 60 and the K-Pop Enlistment Delay That Ends at 30
Korea's Military Service Act runs past a hundred articles, and the one K-pop fans keep relitigating is Article 60. Its second paragraph names three groups a regional Military Manpower Administration chief may postpone: students enrolled at a high school or above, people partway through a course at a training institution, and "outstanding persons in the sports and popular culture and arts fields for the raising of national prestige." The third item was inserted on December 22, 2020. The version sitting on the statute books as I write this took effect on August 28, 2026, under Act No. 21387. The Korean word running through the whole provision is 연기, postponement. Not 면제, exemption. The English headlines from 2020 that called this a military break for BTS were describing a clause that moves a date and does nothing else.
